Site Help

The application has several calculations available via the calculation menu or welcome page (which can be accessed by clicking the "Calculations" menu item).

If you know the flange standard you wish to use simply select the relevant standard from the Welcome page or the calculation menu.

After selecting the standard - First select whether you wish to torque or tension the flange.

Select the pressure units you would like to use for your pump pressure.

Select the lubricant from the drop down list - although you have selected tensioning the application will recommend an equivalent torque which can be used for any bolts which cannot be tensioned.

Select the Units for flange and bolt dimensions.

For Tensioning only select the % cover either 100% one tensioner per bolt; 50% a tensioner on every other bolt or 25% a tensioner on every fourth bolt.

For Torque only select whether you will use the same wrench to breakout the flange, the application will then increase the wrench sizes by a factor of 1.5 to allow for the extra torque required on breakout.

Confirm the Flange Standard Size and Class from the drop downs.

Confirm the Flange material and Gasket type from the drop downs.

Identify whether the joint has a spade & spacer or wafer check valve inserted this will increase the joint thickness and therefore the length under tension and minimum bolt length required.

Now select the Bolt material – it is very important that al details are correct there are great differences in strengths of bolt materials.

CALCULATE – When your data is entered correctly hit the Calculate button. The application will now retrieve the required data for the flange specified and recommend a bolt load bolt and stress and tools suitable to carry out the operation.

TOOL SELECTION – Select one of the Tooling options and Bolt UP will calculate the tool pressure required to achieve the target.

NOTE – observe any messages which are displayed which will warn about tool fit issues.

WARNINGS If there are issues with exceeding pump pressure or bolt stress due to the methods selected then Bolt UP will offer options to resolve the issue.

The remaining three options cover special applications and Clamp (or Hub) connectors.

CUSTOM: If your application is a custom flange such as used on a pressure vessel or heat exchanger, and you have all the material and dimensional details, this option will calculate a minimum bolt load for you. You may then enter your own additional bolt load or stress. As a further option, subject to data you have entered, a recommendded bolt load will be provided for your application.

SPECIAL: Each of these options calculates either a torque or tension value from your specified bolt load or bolt stress. You must ensure that your flange will not be affected by the bolt load applied.

CLAMP CONNECTORS: Select the Clamp manufacturer and size and lubricant used Bolt UP will give the torque required based on the manufacturers recommendations.
